Student learning coding skills on a computer as part of digital education in Lexington, MA

New Covenant School offers coding classes for Preschool and Elementary students, where we introduce children to the world of coding, robotics, and digital innovation in age-appropriate, hands-on ways. Our community is known for strong academics and thoughtful character formation, and we ensure our students learn to use technology with curiosity, confidence, and care. From simple coding games in the early stages to invention projects in upper elementary grades, digital literacy is woven into classroom life on our campus.

Coding In Our Elementary Curriculum

Digital literacy and coding are integrated across subjects in our curriculum, giving children regular, guided practice with core concepts such as sequencing, logic, and digital responsibility. NCS offers students opportunities to explore engineering, invention, coding, and safe technology use through project-based units that connect learning to real-world problems. In the elementary years, students may:

  • Use block-based coding tools to animate stories or design simple games

  • Build algorithms to model science concepts or math patterns

  • Practice digital citizenship and online safety as part of daily classroom routines

What Is Coding For Kids?

For our students, coding isn’t just more screen time. It’s a structured way of thinking that strengthens problem-solving skills. When students write code, they learn to break big tasks into smaller steps, notice patterns, and test solutions systematically. These habits carry over into reading, math, friendships, and decision-making, even when they're not working with computers. Through coding, children practice life skills that shape everyday interactions:

  • Critical Thinking – Examining a problem, choosing a strategy, and evaluating results.

  • Logical Reasoning – Following precise steps and understanding cause and effect.

  • Persistence – Debugging mistakes and trying again with new ideas.

Coding as a Launchpad for Creativity

Coding is also a powerful outlet for imagination. Instead of just consuming digital content, our students create it. They take their own ideas and turn them into stories, games, simulations, and prototypes. We teach children that innovation isn’t reserved for adults in labs. It starts with curious kids who ask, “What if…?” and then build something to find out. This creative mindset pairs beautifully with our Lemelson–MIT Invention Education partnership, which invites students to think like inventors from an early age. Technology can be a tool for solving problems and serving others, not just entertainment. Invention projects challenge children to:

  • Identify a real need in their community

  • Design and test solutions using coding, simple engineering, and storytelling

  • Share their creations and reflect on impact

Digital Literacy and a Changing Career Landscape

From medicine and design to business and environmental science, today’s careers depend on people who understand how technology works, and what it can and can’t do. Our coding programs for kids are treated as a core language of the modern world, alongside reading, writing, and math. Digital literacy is like becoming fluent in Spanish or French: it opens doors to new kinds of communication and collaboration. When students “speak” the language of code, they can:

  • Communicate clearly with technology, giving precise instructions and interpreting responses

  • Understand the strengths and limits of digital tools instead of using them without thought

  • Engage future studies in computer science, engineering, and data science with confidence

The Relationship Between Coding and Robotics for Kids

Robotics teaches students about coding in a way that feels playful and tangible for children. When students program a robot, they instantly see how their instructions affect movement, sound, and light. This direct feedback makes abstract coding concepts concrete and memorable. The entire process blends engineering, creativity, and teamwork to give students a fun introduction to STEM that is welcoming for both analytical thinkers and creative artists. In our elementary program, a lesson in robotics coding for kids might include:

  • Guiding robots through obstacle courses using simple, step-by-step code

  • Collaborating in teams to design robots that solve classroom challenges

  • Reflecting on how sensors, motors, and code work together to respond to the environment
