From Seed to Harvest: Hands-On Preschool Learning at New Covenant School

What does it take to bring food from the farm to our tables? This October, our Preschool students explored that question through a month of discovery, hands-on activities, and a little kitchen creativity!

As part of our study of the journey from seed to harvest, students learned how seeds grow into crops, how farmers care for the land, and how the changing seasons bring an abundance of food to enjoy. Throughout our exploration, we also talked about God's provision and the many ways His goodness is reflected in the world around us.

Exploring the Journey from Farm to Table in Preschool

Learning about where food comes from is an opportunity for young children to make meaningful connections between the natural world and their everyday experiences.

Our Preschoolers discovered how seeds develop into plants and eventually produce the fruits and vegetables we enjoy. They explored the stages of growing and harvesting food while developing an appreciation for the work and care involved in bringing food to our tables.

But we didn't stop at learning where food comes from. We wanted our students to experience what happens next!

Two young children slice apples at a classroom table, one using a peeler, with bowls of fruit and play kitchen equipment nearby.

Little Chefs, Big Discoveries

To bring our farm-to-table learning full circle, our Preschoolers stepped into the kitchen and became little chefs!

Our cooking adventures included:

  • Homemade butter: By shaking a jar of heavy cream, students watched a simple ingredient transform into fresh butter.

  • Fresh bread: Students used their hands to mix, knead, and shape dough, exploring the textures and changes that happen along the way.

  • Homemade applesauce: We turned fresh apples into a delicious treat while connecting our cooking experience to the fall harvest.

  • Personal pizzas: Students rolled out their own pizza dough and prepared toppings, including mushrooms and yellow peppers.

There were plenty of opportunities to explore, experiment, and use our five senses. Students touched and kneaded dough, noticed how ingredients changed, explored the flavors of new foods, and even discussed the different shapes a pizza could take!

Learning Through the Five Senses

Cooking offers wonderful opportunities for preschoolers to develop skills that extend far beyond the kitchen.

These hands-on preschool activities encouraged growth in several areas:

  • Fine motor development: Mixing, shaking, kneading, rolling, and chopping with age-appropriate tools help strengthen the small muscles needed for writing and other everyday tasks.

  • Language development: Describing textures, ingredients, shapes, and flavors introduces new vocabulary and encourages conversation.

  • Early math skills: Measuring, counting, comparing quantities, and identifying shapes bring early math concepts into everyday experiences.

  • Sensory exploration: Using sight, touch, smell, taste, and sound helps children investigate the world around them.

  • Confidence and curiosity: Trying unfamiliar foods, experimenting with ingredients, and participating in food preparation encourage independence and a willingness to explore something new.

These experiences make learning tangible. Children aren't simply hearing about how food is made. They are participating in the process, asking questions, making observations, and discovering things for themselves.

Growing in Knowledge and Gratitude

At New Covenant School, we believe early childhood is a wonderful time to nurture curiosity, build foundational skills, and help children develop an appreciation for the world around them.

Our farm-to-table exploration brought together early science, math, language, sensory development, and practical life skills in a way that was meaningful and fun. It also gave us opportunities to talk about gratitude and recognize God's loving provision in the everyday things we sometimes take for granted.

From planting seeds to making homemade pizza, our Preschoolers experienced the joy of learning by doing. And along the way, they discovered that even the simplest activities can lead to some pretty wonderful discoveries!
